Shanna and her parents, Kevin and Kathy, were joined by Kevin's brother Dan for this year's stroll, representing other family members who contributed to the team's donation to the fight against Alzheimer's.
Again this year, the weather was mild and thousands of walkers strolled the tree-lined path along the Hudson River.
Kevin has jokingly proclaimed that our team slogan is "We walk to win!" Of course it's not a race, but we can be proud of the outcome: $860 raised by the start of the walk. Each year Shanna has set a higher team goal and each year we've exceeded it.
UPDATE 10/25: Shanna reports the team's donation has reached $875, for a three-year total of $1,865. Thanks to every member of our extended family who contributed to this success.
It's not too late to add to the total by donating through Shanna's team page before Nov. 30.
Congratulations of a successful Memory Walk. I have heard a lot about Alzheimer’s disease lately, and most of it is sobering.
ReplyDeleteIf I understood correctly, there is a statistical probability that 50% of all people 85 years old will suffer from Alzheimer’s, and Dolores and I are nearing that age. I also heard an expert on an NPR talk show who commented that it was his belief that this affliction is a major cause of death ranking with cancer, heart disease and diabetes. He opined that this is not born out in the statistics, because cause of death of Alzheimer suffers is most often listed as something else—usually pneumonia. This expert also made the point that Alzheimer’s is the only major cause of death for which cannot now be cured. We have all known cancer patients who are survivors, and folks with heart problems who are able to function normally following surgery or other treatment. I also understand that we do not have a definitive means of diagnosis in living people, although there is hope for a simple test now under development.
All of these issues make it important that there be more awareness and more money available for research, and that is what the Memory Walk is all about. Thank you Shanna and the Murphy team for doing you part.
