Rebecca and her teammates won their first two games as the 2012 Junior National Curling Championship tournament got under way Sunday in Madison, Wisc.
In the first game, "Team Ely" led from the start and defeated a team from Duluth, Minn., by a score of 9-5. The second game was a pitched battle. The team of Rebecca, Hannah, Abigail and Rebecca took an early four-point lead, but after five ends the score was tied. Team Ely took another lead late in the game but the opponent, a Wisconsin team, tied it in the 10th end, sending the match into extra ends. The 11th went down to the wire, when Ely's final rock curled in to cover the button for the win.
Team Ely, based at the Rochester Curling Club, is one of two representing the Grand National Curling Club, the Eastern U.S. regional organization of the U.S. Curling Association. There are 10 men's and 10 women's teams in the Junior Nationals, and the two winning teams will advance to the 2012 Junior World Championship in Ostersund, Sweden.
